The key to not
committing plagiarism is to avoid it. Once an individual avoids plagiarism, it benefits to identify
it.  This paper will analyze a passage
that involves plagiarism and makes
suggestions for how to complete parts of the passage so that it avoids
plagiarism. This paper will decide and describe the extent to which the student
has plagiarized the original source. This paper will discuss two sentences from
the passage that I think is clearly
plagiarized, and I will either rephrase them in my own words or use quotation
marks and a standard APA in-text citation to show I am quoting the original
sentences word for word. This paper will explain how you can identify
plagiarism. This paper will explain ways in which you can avoid plagiarism in my
own writing.

The extent to which the student has plagiarized the
original source is that the student has plagiarized. The first sentence from
the passage that I think is clearly plagiarized is “But it is hard to know if a
conflict of interest between doctors, researchers, and the drug company
stockholders has tainted the results”.  I
would rephrase this quote in my own words by saying, “However, the situation is
difficult to understand if there are
favoritism and unfairness between the practitioners, scholars, and pharmaceutical
company shareholders that has corrupted the outcomes.” The second sentence of the passage that I think is clearly
plagiarized is “Yet the resulting information can be warped for five reasons:
ending a study too soon, not publishing negative results, publishing results
too early, skimming over or ignoring drawbacks, and “buffing” the results by
showing them in the best light (Crossen, 1994, p. 167).” I would use quotation
marks and a standard APA in-text citation to show I am quoting the original sentences
word for word by writing, “Yet, Crossen (1994) reported the resulting
information that can be warped for five reasons: “ending a study too soon, not
publishing negative results, publishing results too early, skimming over or
ignoring drawbacks, and “buffing” the results by showing them in the best
light” (p. 166-167).”

An individual can identify plagiarism if an individual alter
a few words here and there, but the concepts, the sequence in which they were
presented, and almost all of the words were written as if they were the
student’s own instead of those of the first writer, who really wrote them (Plagiarism
and Academic Integrity, n.d).  This
student copied a passage from Cynthia Crossen’s passage into their own paper, without
acknowledging original writer’s work. This student used the views, opinions,
and insights of Cynthia Crossen’s passage. This student tried to paraphrase
Cynthia Crossen’s passage but there were some words to word in-text still current
without any acknowledgment (Plagiarism and Academic Integrity, n.d).  Direct quotes can enhance your writing, only
if it is properly cited using quotation marks and, in parentheses, a page or
paragraph identifier (Plagiarism and Academic Integrity, n.d).

            The first way to
avoid plagiarism in your own writing is to understand the definition of
plagiarism. The second way to avoid plagiarism in your own writing is by
developing effective strategies to avoid plagiarism. The third way to avoid
plagiarism in your own writing is to organize your resources. The fourth way to
avoid plagiarism in your own writing is to use
direct quotes to support your paper.  The
fifth way to avoid plagiarism in your own word is to create a reference page for the work cited.
