Beauty obsession is defined as the unhealthy overemphasis on physical appearances in contemporary society, focusing on the female population. In recent times, the advancement of technology has led to an increased prevalence of social media in our lives, resulting in the rapid emergence of numerous social media platforms. According to a research by Dove, 82% of the surveyed women felt that social media affects the contemporary definition of beauty (Murphy, “82% of Women”). Hence, such media platforms have resulted in messages regarding beauty standards to be ingrained into the daily lives of its audiences, playing a part in influencing their identity construction (Joanne 48).The warped representation of beauty in the contemporary world, exacerbated by the emergence of social media platforms, makes it arduous for those who do not live up to the expectations of the ideal beauty. Physical characteristics-based discrimination, also known as lookism, is augmented by the images of beauty, as portrayed in the social media channels. Social media platforms promote concepts of distorted beauty, resulting in many users feeling physically inadequate and bringing adverse ramifications to an individual’s environmental and psychological well-being (Papadopoulos 12). The ageism reflected on social media platforms urged users to alter their external appearance due to the immense pressure to conform to a stereotype of beauty. Consequently, the emergence of social media media platforms in the contemporary world has also paved the way for humour in the industry. Humour, as a social corrective, aids in assessing situations and critiquing social inequity. As such, humour is often employed to diffuse the tautness around contentious issues, as the easy-going nature immerses itself in topics one may otherwise avert (Goldman 2). Parody, a type of humour, imitates the characteristic traits of another producer or work in an exaggerated manner for a comical effect or to deliver a particular message (D’Errico and Isabella 4). Although the notion of ‘making fun of’ the ridiculed subject results in a higher possibility of viewers being upset, our aim is achieved as parody is capable of retaining the attention of viewers, raising awareness on the issue debated (LeBoeuf 20-21). Hence, this leads to the overarching objective of the research, which will be further elaborated on in the later section.
